Prime Minister of Australia

The Hon Tony Abbott MP
  • Press Statement: Martin Place siege

Early this morning the Martin Place siege ended with the death of the lone gunman and tragically, the loss of two hostages – innocent Australians caught up in the horror of yesterday.

Five other people – four hostages and a New South Wales police officer – have been injured.

State and Commonwealth agencies are investigating.

  • A Message from the PM

A lot of good things have happened in 2014.

The boats have stopped, the carbon tax is gone, red tape is being cut, free trade agreements have been finalised and the largest roads programme ever is now underway.

Since the end of last year, over 160,000 new jobs have been created – and this is helping families and small businesses right around Australia.

  • Address to the RECOGNISE Inaugural Gala Dinner, Sydney

Thank you very much indeed. Thank you Aunty Donna for your Welcome to Country.

Thank you to everyone for being here tonight to support this very important cause.

I particularly welcome my Parliamentary colleagues, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Senator Nigel Scullion.

  • A strong and sustainable Medicare

The $7 Medicare co-payment measure announced in the 2014-15 Budget will no longer proceed.

The Government will instead implement a package of measures that will strengthen Medicare and help make it sustainable, ensuring Australians will continue to have access to affordable, world-class health care.

  • Statement on Phillip Hughes, House of Representatives

Madam Speaker, death is the certain end to every life but it never loses its power to shock and dismay – as we’ve all found since the passing of Phillip Hughes last week.

    He was a great cricketer.

    He was grand company.

He was the best of sons and the best of brothers.

Good afternoon. Today I am announcing a significant reshuffle, which will reset and refocus the Government for the coming year. It will put jobs and families at the heart of our political agenda for 2015. This is a Ministry for jobs and families and it’s a sign that this is a Government which wants the economy and the budget to be front and centre in the coming year.

The news out of Cairns is heartbreaking. All parents would feel a gut-wrenching sadness at what has happened. This is an unspeakable crime. These are trying days for our country. Tonight, there will be tears and prayers across our country for these children. My thoughts are with the Queensland Police and all who have to respond to this terrible situation.
